Rare Northern Lights Dazzle Observers Across Southern UK

The aurora borealis painted the night sky across the United Kingdom over the weekend, drawing stunned onlookers from Scotland down to southern England. The spectacular natural phenomenon was observed in areas including Kent, Hampshire, and Devon, typically far south of where the display is normally visible.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, sky-gazers were treated to vivid displays even in locations with heavy light pollution, such as Sheerness in Kent. While the northern lights are predominantly seen near the Arctic Circle and northern Scotland, this event extended well into southern latitudes.

According to the Met Office, conditions for viewing are expected to persist until Tuesday, provided skies remain clear. The agency noted that similar geomagnetic longitudes, particularly across Scotland, will continue to offer opportunities for sightings through the week.

The aurora is caused by charged particles from the sun, known as solar wind, traveling at approximately one million miles per hour. When these particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field—especially when the solar wind’s polarity opposes Earth’s—they are directed toward the magnetic poles. There, they collide with atmospheric gases, releasing energy as light.

Oxygen emissions produce the characteristic green and rare red hues at higher altitudes, while nitrogen collisions generate blue and purple colors. This interaction creates the dynamic, colorful curtains of light seen during geomagnetic storms.

Experts have identified 2026 as a peak year for aurora activity, driven by the sun’s 11-year cycle which has placed it in a period of heightened solar performance. This increased activity has resulted in more frequent and widespread displays of the northern lights in recent months.

  1. Good luck seeing purple nitrogen hues through all that South London streetlight pollution. Hope you got a clearer shot.
