Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Lung Surgery for Early-Stage Nodule

Pope Leo XIV stated on Sunday that he will undergo surgery later this week to remove a “localized nodule” from his lung. The Pope made the announcement during his weekly blessing in St. Peter’s Square, noting that physicians detected the growth at a “very early stage” and recommended the procedure.

“Following their advice, I have therefore decided to undergo an operation to remove it,” Leo said. He thanked the gathered crowds for their spiritual support and asked for their prayers.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that the procedure is set to take place in the coming days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, which serves as the primary medical facility for the papacy. Bruni added that the estimated post-operative recovery period is approximately one week.

The American Cancer Society describes a lung nodule as a small abnormal area, typically three centimeters or less, often discovered during CT scans conducted for unrelated reasons such as trauma, heart conditions, or infections.

Leo, who has no known prior health issues, previously rose to the papacy unexpectedly, having been known to acquaintances simply as “Bob.” His next scheduled international trip is set for early November, covering Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, though it remains unclear whether the surgery will impact these travel plans.

Beyond health updates, the Pope continued his focus on global affairs during his Sunday address. He renewed calls for peace in Ukraine, specifically appealing for the safe transport of grain across the Black Sea. “The daily bread of millions of people cannot be held hostage by war,” Leo said.

Additionally, on Saturday, the Pope used social media platform X to advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. He characterized capital punishment as inadmissible because it attacks human dignity, arguing that justice and public safety can be maintained through effective detention systems that also allow for the possibility of redemption.

  1. I hope the November trip isn’t cancelled. He always pushes through no matter what. Fingers crossed for a quick return to work.

  2. Can anyone clarify if Gemelli Hospital is where he had other procedures? Just curious about the continuity of care there.
