Pope Leo XIV Scheduled for Lung Surgery After Nodular Lesion Discovery

Vatican officials confirmed on Saturday that Pope Leo XIV is set to undergo surgery later this week after medical examinations revealed a nodular lesion in his lung. The Holy See stated that the pontiff’s recuperation period should last approximately seven days.

The 71-year-old pope disclosed on Sunday that physicians had identified the abnormality during routine health screenings. Describing the condition as being in an early stage, Leo noted that the lesion was “circumscribed,” a term indicating defined borders.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni indicated that the pope would be admitted to the hospital within the first few days of the week. While Bruni did not specify an exact date, reports suggest Leo will receive treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where a private apartment is maintained for the pope’s medical stays.

Neither the Vatican statement nor the pope’s office clarified whether the procedure or recovery time would affect his itinerary for a papal trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, scheduled for November 7-16. However, on Sunday, the pontiff specifically requested prayers for the upcoming journey to Peru.

Leo, recognized as the first American pope, has no documented history of prior health issues. He is known for maintaining an active physical regimen, which includes regular tennis matches and swimming sessions at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo.

  1. They didn’t mention if he can still make it to South America in November. That would be a huge disappointment if cancelled.

  2. How is an American even becoming Pope? That feels historically wild to me. But hopefully he stays healthy regardless.
