Moshe and Shira Shapira have shared their story with FRANCE 24, reflecting on the loss of their 22-year-old son, Aner, who was killed during the Hamas assault on the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. Despite his absence, the couple describes feeling his presence surrounding them every day.
While acknowledging that time does not erase pain, the parents say they are gradually learning how to navigate life amidst their grief. Aner is remembered for his extraordinary bravery during the attack; reports indicate he managed to hurl seven grenades back at Hamas fighters before an eighth grenade exploded in his hands, resulting in his death.
The Shapiras discussed these memories and their ongoing journey of mourning in an interview for the Perspective program.
Seven grenades? That is beyond comprehension. How does anyone find the strength to do that under such horrific circumstances?
I still cannot believe it has been over two years. Time truly does not heal; it only changes how we carry the pain.
What an incredibly brave young man. His story is heartbreaking but truly inspiring for everyone who reads it.
