OpenAI is expanding its advertising portfolio by introducing visual display ads that will appear alongside images generated within ChatGPT. The new format is designed to help brands tell more compelling stories to the chatbot’s vast user base, following a strategy initiated earlier this year to support free and low-cost subscription tiers.
The visual advertisements are scheduled to roll out in the United States later this month, featuring a select group of initial advertisers. OpenAI emphasized that the ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence the responses or image generation outputs provided to users. This development comes as competition intensifies in the AI chatbot space, particularly with Meta’s recent launch of Muse, a free agentic AI application.
OpenAI originally launched its ad program this year and subsequently expanded it to India in August. The current push toward visual imagery aims to attract online advertisers seeking to reach the platform’s 1.2 billion weekly active users, with plans for a global rollout in the future.
While the integration of visual ads may disrupt the user experience, analysts suggest this could be intentional, potentially driving casual users toward paid subscriptions to avoid advertisements. To support these efforts, OpenAI is broadening its measurement tools and partner ecosystem. The company now includes click attribution solutions from partners such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin.
Additionally, OpenAI has brought on full-funnel measurement partners Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. Partnerships with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic will facilitate geo-based advertising experiments. The company is also collaborating with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to develop brand suitability evaluation pilots, helping advertisers better understand the ChatGPT advertising environment.
I wonder if the ads will actually be relevant or just generic brand awareness spots. If they’re as annoying as Instagram feed ads, I’m switching to Claude.
Smart move by OpenAI. With 1.2 billion users, advertisers will pay top dollar. This might finally make the free tier sustainable long-term.
Does anyone else find this a bit jarring? ChatGPT was my quiet space for thinking. Adding visual ads feels like we’re just another attention economy platform now.
Monetizing the free tier again? I guess I’ll just pay for Plus to get a clean experience like we had before. Goodbye free access.
I hope these ads are clearly labeled and not sneaky. The last thing I need is random banners while I’m trying to brainstorm creative ideas.
