A single fatality has been confirmed and 102 individuals rescued following the disappearance of an Indonesian passenger ferry in the Java Sea amid severe weather conditions, according to authorities.
The Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 people, lost communication with its operators in the early hours of Sunday. The vessel had departed from Surabaya on the island of Java on Saturday, bound for the port city of Banjarmasin on Borneo, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency reported.
I Putu Sudayana, head of the local search and rescue office in Banjarmasin, stated that the ship encountered significant rough weather before going missing. Its last known location was approximately 81 nautical miles (150 kilometers) from Banjarmasin.
Rescue teams are currently scouring the area for the remaining passengers and crew. Operations have been complicated by wave heights reaching 2.5 meters (8.2 feet). Sudayana warned of the extreme danger to rescue vessels, noting that even the 40-meter Basarnas ship faces substantial risk in the treacherous conditions.
This incident follows recent maritime tragedies in the region. Last month, a ferry fire traveling between Bali and Lombok resulted in one death and five missing persons. Additionally, in July, a ferry carrying over 70 people sank near Selayar Island, located south of Sulawesi.
One dead is still far too many. Prayers go out to the families of the victims and the missing crew members.
Rescuers working in eight-foot waves is reckless. Hope they have a solid plan before they lose anyone else.
