Despite its reputation for murky, grey waters, the North Sea conceals a vibrant ecosystem that Dutch cinematographer Peter van Rodijnen has spent over 20 years documenting. Inspired by the adventures of Jacques Cousteau, van Rodijnen persisted in filming the region’s marine life despite early skepticism from friends and family who viewed the area as an unappealing “murky bowl of soup.”
Advancements in camera technology allowed van Rodijnen to capture striking footage of seals, sharks, tuna, orcas, and shorthorn sculpins near his home on the Dutch coast. Nearly a decade ago, he partnered with director Mark Verkerk to bring these images to the screen.
The resulting documentary offers a rare glimpse into the kaleidoscopic life lurking beneath the North Sea’s surface, challenging the assumption that sediment-filled waters support little life. Van Rodijnen expressed confidence that he and Verkerk were the right team to tell this story, saying, “If somebody can make a movie about the North Sea, it’s got to be us.”
