The committee responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize is set to reveal this year’s recipient on Friday, October 9. The announcement is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Central European Summer Time (09:00 GMT) in Oslo, Norway.
The Nobel Peace Prize holds a distinct place among the awards, as it is the only category that regularly honors achievements from the previous calendar year. This tradition distinguishes it from the prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature, whose winners were already named earlier in the week.
Strict confidentiality governs the selection process; the statutes forbid judges from discussing deliberations or revealing nominations for 50 years. Consequently, any public speculation regarding the winner remains purely conjectural. While self-nomination is prohibited, US President Donald Trump publicly stated earlier this week that he believes he deserves the honor.
The prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately equivalent to $1.2 million or €1 million. Throughout its history, spanning from 1901 to 2025, the peace prize has been awarded 106 times to 143 individual laureates and organizations.
The official award ceremonies are scheduled to take place on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. A livestream of the announcement event is expected to begin around 08:45 GMT, providing real-time coverage and analysis from the DW newsroom in Bonn.
The fact that it honors the previous year’s work is fascinating. Makes it quite different from the science prizes announced earlier.
Can’t believe I have to wait until Friday! The suspense is killing me. Who do you think it will be?
I wonder if the political climate will influence the choice this year. Usually, it’s always the same type of activist.
