No Bail for Teenager Who Struck Newcastle Knights Fans, Injuring Five-Year-Old

An 18-year-old probationary driver accused of plowing a vehicle into a gathering of Newcastle Knights supporters will remain in custody after being denied bail. The incident, which occurred on a Saturday morning near a major roundabout, resulted in injuries to ten individuals, including a five-year-old child who was placed in an induced coma.

Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe appeared in court facing charges related to dangerous driving. The crowd had assembled along the streets to bid farewell to their team. Community members have since rallied to support those currently hospitalized following the crash.

Prosecutors allege that Samarasinghe lost control of the car, sending it into the group of fans. The severity of the injuries, particularly to the young child, has drawn significant attention as the legal proceedings continue.
