Rees-Zammit Stars as Bristol Down Northampton; Gloucester Rout Quins

Louis Rees-Zammit delivered a masterclass on the wing as Bristol Bears secured a statement victory over Gallagher Premiership champions Northampton Saints, winning 41-26 at Ashton Gate. The Welsh international continued his strong start to the season, adding another two-try haul to follow up his opening-day performance against Sale Sharks.

Bristol controlled large portions of the match, with Harry Randall, Gabriel Oghre, Tom Jordan, and a penalty try also crossing the whitewash. James Williams contributed three conversions and a penalty kick, guiding the home side to a bonus-point win. Despite being reduced to 13 men after yellow cards for Tommy Freeman and Ion Neculai, Northampton stayed in contention until the final stages, with George Hendy scoring twice and contributions from Alex Mitchell and Josh Kemeny limiting the deficit.

Northampton trailed by just one point at halftime and mounted a late resurgence through substitute Mitchell and Kemeny, but Bristol held firm. The match was effectively sealed after a penalty try awarded following an illegal challenge on Rees-Zammit by Freeman, consolidating Bristol’s place in the top half of the table ahead of their next fixture against Saracens.

In other Premiership action, Gloucester made it two wins from two with a dominant 48-0 dismantling of Harlequins at Kingsholm. An impressive opening-day victory over Exeter was surpassed in dominance as Gloucester scored eight tries through Ben Loader, Jac Morgan, Will Trenholm, Charlie Atkinson, Seb Atkinson, Will Joseph, Caolon Engefield, and George Barton. Barton kicked four conversions. Harlequins, missing key England internationals Marcus Smith and Alex Dombrandt, were thoroughly outplayed and face a significant recovery period.

Leicester Tigers claimed their first victory of the campaign with a hard-fought 24-19 win over Newcastle Falcons at a sold-out Kingston Park. After an early try by Newcastle’s Obi Ene, Leicester seized control with second-half tries from Samiuela Moli and Adam Radwan, along with kicking from Billy Searle, to lead 17-5 at the break. George McGuigan and Will Hurd added further scores for their respective sides, while a late try from Newcastle’s Cam Jordan sparked a nervy finish that the Tigers successfully weathered to move into fifth place.
