NASA Completes New Deep Space Antenna to Relieve Network Congestion

NASA has bolstered its Deep Space Network with a newly operational 114-foot (34-meter) radio-frequency antenna in the California desert. The addition aims to ease capacity constraints on the infrastructure responsible for communicating with over 40 robotic missions exploring the solar system and interstellar space.

The network, which tracks objects such as the Voyager probes and New Horizons, has faced increasing pressure due to the Artemis program. High-priority communications for the uncrewed Artemis 1 flight in 2022 and the upcoming crewed Artemis 2 mission in 2026 have significantly reduced available bandwidth for other deep-space operations.

Brad Arnold, manager of the Deep Space Network at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, previously warned that the Artemis program would be “the gorilla in the room,” necessitating that astronaut safety take precedence over robotic spacecraft. He noted that despite ongoing efforts to expand the network, demand currently outpaces supply, leading to reduced availability for other missions.

The new facility, designated Deep Space Station 23, is located at the Goldstone complex near Barstow, California. It came online on August 3 and initially tracked data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The station is part of the DSN Aperture Enhancement Project, launched in 2009, which plans to construct six new 34-meter antennas. DSS-23 is the fifth of these units, with the final antenna, DSS-33, scheduled to begin operations at the Canberra complex in Australia in 2029.

The project has encountered delays and cost overruns. A 2015 estimate by the NASA Office of Inspector General placed the total cost at $362.4 million, but by fiscal year 2023, projections had risen by 68% to $706 million, with the timeline slipping nearly five years behind schedule.

Established in December 1963, the DSN operates three global complexes—in California, Spain, and Australia—each featuring large 230-foot (70-meter) dishes alongside smaller ones. Since its inception, the network has supported historic milestones ranging from the Apollo 11 moonwalk to data confirming that the Voyager probes entered interstellar space. As international space agencies increasingly rely on the DSN, NASA is also planning a permanent lunar base in the 2030s that will eventually incorporate a coordinated communication network.
