JWST Reveals Rare O-Type Star Within the ‘Treasure Chest’ of Carina Nebula

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has provided a detailed view of the “Treasure Chest,” a cometary globule located within the star-forming Carina Nebula. Captured on August 6, 2026, and released on August 21, 2026, the image reveals a dense cloud of gas and dust resembling an open wooden chest filled with newborn stars rather than gold or jewels.

Situated approximately 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina, the nebula spans roughly 260 light-years and hosts some of the Milky Way’s most massive stars alongside tens of thousands of protostars. The Treasure Chest is a cometary globule characterized by a dense, dark head and a sweeping tail. While named for its comet-like appearance, this particular structure closely resembles a chest with its lid propped open.

Using its Near-Infrared Camera, JWST identified the source of the internal glow: a compact cluster containing approximately 70 young stars embedded within the dust. Among these is a rare O-type star, which is roughly 19 times as massive as the sun. Astronomers estimate the cluster to be about 1.3 million years old, though earlier studies suggested an age as young as 100,000 years. Many of these stars remain shrouded in the gas and dust from which they formed, but over time, radiation from the cluster will disperse this material, exposing the hidden stars.

The globule’s distinctive shape is being sculpted by external forces. Approximately 39 light-years away lies Eta Carinae, the most luminous object in the nebula. Known for its 19th-century “Great Eruption,” which briefly made it one of the brightest stars visible from Earth, Eta Carinae is part of a binary system that includes a star roughly 100 times as massive as the sun. Along with the nearby Trumpler 16 star cluster, Eta Carinae’s intense radiation and stellar winds are eroding the Treasure Chest’s less-dense gas.

Eventually, the combined effects of internal stellar radiation and external winds from nearby massive stars will completely erode the remaining gas and dust. As the cosmic chest disappears, it will fully reveal the stellar population within, ending its current obscured phase.
