Mylla Films, the Swedish boutique genre specialist founded by “Midsommar” producer Patrik Andersson and NonStop Entertainment CEO Jakob Abrahamsson, continues to attract prominent Nordic talent since its 2022 Cannes launch. The studio is currently positioning several key projects ahead of the Finnish Film Affair in Helsinki.
The latest addition to Mylla’s roster is Tobias Forge, frontman of the Grammy-winning metal band Ghost. Forge will make his directorial debut with a music video segment for the U.S.-financed horror anthology “V/H/S/ Mixtape.” The five-and-a-half-minute clip, described by Andersson as an “old school story-driven death metal music video,” stars Gustav Hammarsten and Nour el-Refai. The segment was produced in just three months and is set to premiere at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on September 30, followed by a Shudder release on October 9.
Abrahamsson noted the rapid production timeline, stating, “We were contacted in June and managed to turn around Tobias’ segment in three months. It’s been extremely fun and frankly astonishing!” NonStop Entertainment will handle Nordic distribution for the anthology.
Also joining the Mylla slate is Henrik Svensson, the production designer behind Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” and Kristoffer Borgli’s “Sick of Myself.” Svensson is making his directorial debut with “The End,” a low-budget project fully financed by private equity coin. Starring prolific Swedish author Mattias Ribbing and featuring stunts by Eos Karlsson of “Kung Fury” fame, the film is characterized by Andersson as an avant-garde audiovisual experience with “literally killing soundtracks.” Andersson compared the project to a Jodorowsky film and targets a spring 2027 launch at genre festivals.
While these agile productions reflect Mylla’s goal to “fertilize the soil of genre filmmaking in the Nordics,” the founders acknowledge that tough financing conditions have required a shift in strategy. Higher-end projects like Michael Marcimain’s gothic western “Devastation” have faced slower development, prompting a more agile approach to scope. Meanwhile, Mylla’s first fiction feature, “Bloodsuckers,” remains on track for an early 2027 release via NonStop Entertainment, with Charades managing sales.
At the Finnish Film Affair, Mylla will pitch “Trespassers” (“Inkräktare”), a €3 million ($3.4 million) horror film written by Johannes Persson and Melina Maraki. Scandi distribution group Scanbox has already joined the project and assisted with script development. Based on a nightmare Persson experienced about a ritualistic execution, the story follows four members of a failed anti-establishment movement who trek into Northern Sweden’s wilderness. After a rafting accident strands them, they encounter a isolated group with terrifying beliefs. Abrahamsson cited “Deliverance” as a key inspiration for the premise.
Persson, known for casting roles in films such as “A Man Called Ove” and the Netflix series “Snabba Cash,” is currently assembling an A-list cast. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late summer 2027.
