Meta has implemented a ban on advertising from ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, across its platforms in the United States and several other nations. The move intensifies the ongoing rivalry between two major social media operators.
The restriction, which took effect on Thursday, prohibits both direct advertisements from ByteDance and third-party marketing messages that link directly to TikTok. The decision follows an earlier report by Bloomberg regarding the scope of the policy change.
In a statement provided to The Verge, Meta spokesperson Christopher Sgro defended the company’s stance, noting that rejecting promotional services from a competitor is a standard business practice across various industries. “We don’t have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps,” Sgro said, adding that Meta will continue to compete on its own merits.
I wonder if ByteDance will retaliate by banning Meta ads on TikTok? The ad war is officially on.
Meta acting all high and mighty about ‘competitive merit’ while blocking competitors. Classic move, really.
Wait, does this mean third-party agencies can’t promote TikTok anymore? That’s a huge blow to their US revenue.
Honestly, this is just standard corporate warfare. Why let a competitor sell ads on your lawn?
