The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered major moments on Sunday night, headlined by Madonna’s long-awaited return to the stage and a historic milestone for Taylor Swift. The ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, featured high-energy performances, heartfelt tributes, and several award-winning collaborations.
Madonna made her first appearance at the VMAs in more than 20 years, opening with the declaration, “It’s mother.” She performed tracks from her recent album, “Confessions II,” including the club hit “Danceteria” alongside Charli XCX. The performance featured cameos from Debi Mazar and Julia Garner, both of whom appeared in the song’s music video. Madonna also shared the stage with Sabrina Carpenter for a duet of “Bring Your Love,” which later secured the Best Collaboration award.
In a touching tribute, Kacey Musgraves performed “I Will Always Love You” following a short video honoring Dolly Parton, who passed away last month after a brief battle with cancer. Parton released the iconic song in 1974, which gained renewed popularity after Whitney Houston’s legendary cover.
K-pop sensation LISA also made waves with the television debut of her new single, “SaWaDiKa.” The performance included the artist riding in the front of a traditional Thai tuk-tuk. Earlier in the evening, she accepted the Best Pop award for her track “Dream feat. Kentaro Sakaguchi.”>
The late grunge pioneers Nirvana were honored with the Video Vanguard Award, recognizing their profound impact on the medium. Surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear accepted the prize during a tribute that featured archival footage of frontman Kurt Cobain discussing the creation of classics such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” and “Heart-Shaped Box.”>
Taylor Swift made history by receiving the VMAs’ first-ever Artist Director Honors, an accolade given to artists who have expanded the possibilities of music video and visual storytelling. The award guarantees Swift will surpass Beyoncé as the most-awarded artist in VMA history, breaking their previous tie of 30 Moon Person statues each as of 2024. Swift enters the night with 11 nominations.
The 2026 VMAs aired on CBS and MTV and are available for streaming on Paramount+.

Sorry, but did anyone else notice the VMA stats haven’t caught up to Beyoncé’s actual dominance yet?
Who else is surprised Nirvana won Video Vanguard? The grunge legacy really deserved this recognition tonight.
Taylor Swift making history is huge, but I’m still obsessed with Madonna and Charli XCX crushing that collaboration!
