Mac Allister scores winner as Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid

Alexis Mac Allister produced a commanding display to help Liverpool come from behind to defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League, letting his play address recent contract uncertainty. The Argentine midfielder, whose deal runs until 2028, had openly expressed his desire for a new agreement just 24 hours prior, stating he felt he needed to demonstrate the level of performance he knows he is capable of.

After falling behind to Marcos Llorente, Liverpool responded through a Dominik Szoboszlai equalizer before Mac Allister turned the tie on its head. His powerful left-footed strike from outside the box gave no chance to goalkeeper Jan Oblak, marking a significant moment in Andoni Iraola’s managerial debut at Anfield.

Iraola praised the partnership between Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, noting that the midfielders naturally arrive in the box to add goals. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson agreed, telling BBC Radio 5 Live that players must “earn it” on the pitch when contract situations are unresolved.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard highlighted Mac Allister’s outstanding performance, urging consistency and top-level displays as the best way to secure the club’s reward. Mac Allister described the win as a positive step, emphasizing the team’s desire and the importance of supporting the fans at Anfield.

Former defender Stephen Warnock suggested that while the contract debate may continue, fans already recognize Mac Allister’s quality as a World Cup and Premier League winner. He added that placing the player in a suitable system will be key to unlocking his best football.
