Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has accepted full responsibility for his team’s disjointed first-half performance after substitutes Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Pedro Neto orchestrated a dramatic 6-3 Carabao Cup victory over Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
The result keeps Chelsea’s silverware hopes alive in a season without European football, but it was only after halftime that the Blues fully asserted their quality. The match began poorly for Alonso, whose side were booed off the pitch by frustrated supporters at the interval.
Leeds, who also made significant changes to their lineup under manager Daniel Farke, took advantage of Chelsea’s lack of rhythm. Tarik Muharemovic opened the scoring for the visitors, and Brenden Aaronson doubled their lead shortly after the restart, leaving Chelsea trailing 2-0.
In response, Alonso made four halftime substitutions, introducing Palmer, Rogers, Neto, and Reece James. The impact was immediate and decisive. Palmer scored twice, while Neto also found the back of the net. Rogers, though not on the scoresheet, was instrumental in the attack, helping to create four goals from open play during the comeback.
Thirty-five-year-old Danny Welbeck was the only starter to make a compelling case for increased involvement, scoring a brace. Meanwhile, academy debutant Reggie Watson and young attackers Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens were withdrawn at halftime following yellow cards or tactical changes.
Speaking after the match, Alonso refused to shift blame to his players for the shaky start. “I need to take my own blame and my own responsibility on the things that happen,” he said. “I need to be able to help them better so they are not responsible, and after you need to react and think what’s better for the team.”
Alonso acknowledged the difficulty of managing a large squad in domestic cups, noting that matches like this are vital for keeping dozens of players engaged throughout the campaign. He insisted he would not adopt a cynical view regarding the performance gap between his star players and the fringe options forced into action.
For Leeds, the defeat ends their cup run, while for Chelsea, the win represents progress despite the defensive vulnerabilities exposed in the first half.
