Luke Grimes Reveals He Hasn’t Spoken to Kevin Costner Since ‘Yellowstone’ Wrapped

Although Kevin Costner and Luke Grimes shared a father-son dynamic on television, the two have reportedly maintained no personal contact since the conclusion of the hit Western series “Yellowstone.” In a recent interview with USA Today, Grimes, who currently headlines the show’s spin-off “Marshals,” stated plainly that he has not spoken to Costner since their professional paths diverged.

The 44-year-old actor attributed the silence to their respective schedules rather than any interpersonal conflict. “Not for any other reason other than just, you know, we’re both busy guys and life moves on,” Grimes explained.

“Yellowstone” concluded its five-season run in December 2024. Grimes portrayed Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of patriarch John Dutton, played by Costner. While Grimes remained on screen for the entirety of the series, Costner’s character was killed off partway through the fifth season, absenting him from the final six episodes that comprised Season 5B.

When queried about the possibility of Costner returning for “Marshals,” Grimes expressed interest but acknowledged the likelihood was slim. He noted that if a cameo were to occur, he would prefer it involve Kayce’s late wife, Monica Long Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille, rather than his father. Monica’s character died of cancer prior to the events of the spin-off.

“I think that’d be more poignant to the character… There’s been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her,” Grimes said.

The premise of “Marshals” sees Kayce leave the Yellowstone Ranch to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. The series leverages his background as a cowboy and former Navy SEAL as he combats violence in Montana, navigating the tension between family obligations and the psychological toll of law enforcement duty.

The first season of “Marshals” premiered in March, with the second season airing on Sunday.
