For many residents, the drilling infrastructure is obscured by architecture or terrain, yet the health and environmental consequences are increasingly visible. Wells are concealed behind fake structures on Pico Boulevard near Beverly Hills, disguised as artificial islands off the coast of Long Beach, and exposed within the Inglewood Oil Field, the largest urban oil field in the nation, which sits adjacent to Kenneth Hahn State Park.
These operations release volatile organic compounds, including benzene, alongside hydrogen sulfide and methane. Research indicates that proximity to such sites correlates with reduced lung function, cardiovascular disease, adverse birth outcomes, certain cancers, and autoimmune conditions. Residents frequently report headaches, nausea, eye irritation, and respiratory distress, with community advocates noting these symptoms have affected families across generations.
