Citadel CEO Ken Griffin has committed $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), a donation the institution described as the largest individual gift in the history of higher education. The pledge, announced on Wednesday, will primarily fund the establishment of a new campus in Miami, with $2 billion specifically allocated for the project.
This contribution surpasses the previous record of $2 billion set last year when Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny donated to Oregon Health & Science University. Griffin, whose net worth is estimated by Bloomberg at $57.5 billion, will also join CMU’s board of trustees as part of the arrangement.
In a statement, Griffin highlighted the strategic importance of the expansion. “The opportunity to bring Carnegie Mellon to Miami places our city at the heart of humanistic and scientific advancement and amplifies the University’s international reach and impact,” he said. He added that the new campus, dubbed CMU Miami, aims to cultivate talent and expertise to launch new enterprises, bolster the local economy, and advance national prosperity.
The new campus is planned for a 35-acre site in Wynwood, a district recognized for its vibrant art scene. Construction is expected to commence in 2027, with student enrollment scheduled to begin in 2028. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to support more than 3,500 students.
Unlike traditional university structures, the academic program at the Miami campus will not be organized around conventional majors. Instead, it will focus on addressing complex societal challenges, including climate resilience and national security.
Griffin’s philanthropy in South Florida has intensified since he relocated Citadel’s headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022. In addition to this historic gift, he has contributed $50 million each to the University of Miami’s cancer center, Baptist Health Foundation’s neuroscience institute, and Success Academy to support the charter school network’s expansion into the region.
Before this announcement, Griffin’s largest charitable contribution was a $300 million donation to Harvard University, his alma mater, in 2023. He also gave $125 million to the University of Chicago in 2017 while Citadel was still based in Illinois. Griffin has previously been vocal about his support for Florida’s business-friendly environment and low taxes, contrasting them with his concerns regarding crime in Chicago.
Griffin is scheduled to appear on CNBC TV at 10 a.m. ET to discuss the details of the pledge.
