Volunteer bakers in the south of England are using their own money to ensure children from low-income families do not miss out on birthday celebrations. The Fareham and Gosport branch of Free Cakes for Kids sources ingredients, bakes, and delivers cakes to young people whose families are unable to provide one.
Natalie Parker, who now leads the local group, joined as a baker during her maternity leave in 2024. She described the prospect of a child going without a birthday cake as “heart-breaking.” The organization is part of a wider national network, which has recently seen a rise in demand and is actively recruiting additional volunteers.
Parker shared that she discovered the group through Facebook and decided to participate to stay occupied while caring for her son. Her own child has often questioned why other children do not receive cakes, a concept he finds difficult to grasp.
The local chapter operates by receiving referrals through community partners such as food banks, schools, and churches. Rather than interacting directly with families, the group posts requests in a private Facebook group where volunteers claim them. Bakers frequently customize designs to match a child’s favorite characters or interests.
While the organization attempts to supply toppers, boards, and packaging when funds allow, most volunteers cover the cost of ingredients themselves. Parker noted that rising food prices make this a significant financial commitment, but she believes it is a worthwhile investment to prevent children from missing out on a special occasion.
The group currently includes more than 30 bakers, ranging from amateur home cooks to professionals running their own businesses. According to Parker, baking expertise is not a prerequisite for joining the initiative.
