Isao Harimoto, a towering figure in Japanese baseball history who overcame childhood trauma from the Hiroshima atomic bombing to become the sport’s first 3,000-hit club member, has died. He was 86.
Harimoto’s legacy in Nippon Professional Baseball is defined by his record 3,085 career hits, a milestone that remains unbroken. Nicknamed the “Hit Machine” for his consistent batting prowess, he played for multiple clubs across his career, most notably the dominant Yomiuri Giants. He retired in 1981 after 23 professional seasons.
His path to the sport began with adversity. Born to Korean parents in Japan, Harimoto was forced to learn to bat left-handed after a severe accident at age four resulted in burns and limited mobility in his right hand.
He also survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 as a five-year-old. His mother reportedly threw herself over him and his sister to shield them from the blast. These experiences deeply shaped his life and perspective.
Following his retirement, Harimoto transitioned into a role as a television commentator, remaining a visible presence in the baseball world. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the game, he was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
