Italy has announced it will deploy warships to guarantee safe passage for its commercial vessels through the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a decisive move that sidesteps potential delays within European Union frameworks. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized that Rome possesses the necessary capabilities to safeguard the waterway, warning that allowing the strait to become impassable would result in severe economic consequences.
Crosetto criticized the tendency to wait for collective EU action, stating that bureaucratic inertia must not worsen an already volatile situation. The strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, serves as one of the globe’s most critical shipping corridors for trade between Europe and Asia, handling approximately 12 to 15 percent of global commerce. It is particularly vital for the transport of oil, gas, and container traffic via the Suez Canal.
The strategic importance of this narrow passage has intensified following Iran’s effective seizure of the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year during its conflict with the United States and Israel. That action disrupted the world’s primary oil chokepoint, forcing Gulf exporters, notably Saudi Arabia, to divert crude shipments through alternative routes, including pipelines and Red Sea shipping lanes that rely on Bab al-Mandeb.
Tensions in the region have escalated further due to recent military advancements by the Iran-backed Houthi movement. In a rapid offensive over the past few weeks, Houthi forces gained control of Yemen’s entire western Red Sea coastline, including key islands. This expansion has granted the group unrestricted access to the waterway, posing a significant threat to international shipping given their history of targeting vessels linked to the US or its allies.
While the US and EU have previously conducted military operations to shield merchant ships from Houthi attacks, these efforts have struggled to fully secure the route as fighting in Yemen intensifies. Italy’s unilateral decision marks a shift toward national action to protect vital trade arteries in an increasingly unstable maritime environment.
