British Woman Rescued in Malawi After Deadly Shootout Leaves Four Suspects Dead

A British national who was abducted in Malawi nearly a week ago has been rescued during a police operation in the southern city of Blantyre. The exchange of gunfire between officers and suspected kidnappers resulted in the deaths of four men, while a senior police official sustained gunshot injuries.

Nusrat Osman, 47, was freed on Thursday evening. According to local reports, she has been reunited with her family and is undergoing hospital treatment for physical and mental health assessments following the ordeal.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira, who participated in the rescue mission, was also shot and hospitalized. Authorities stated that he remains in stable condition.

The Malawi Police Service confirmed in a statement that the suspects were armed with an AK-47 rifle and a pistol. “The criminals got shot and were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to the injuries,” the service said.

Osman, a resident of Leicester in the UK, had been living in Malawi for several years and works for an auditing firm. She is married with two young children. On 11 September, she was abducted in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Blantyre while driving home. Four unidentified men reportedly blocked her vehicle, forced her into another car, and drove away.

Her disappearance triggered a widespread manhunt and prompted authorities to offer a reward of 30 million Malawian kwacha (approximately $17,000 or £12,500) for information leading to her rescue and the conviction of those responsible.

The case presented challenges for investigators, as no ransom demands or communications from the kidnappers were received after her abduction. Her family made emotional public appeals for her safe return, describing the event as deeply distressing.

The kidnapping alarmed both the local business community and British expatriates in the southern African nation, where abductions of foreigners are rare. The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was aware of the incident and was in contact with local authorities.

Police have not yet released the identities of the four deceased suspects, nor have they disclosed a motive for the kidnapping or whether additional individuals were involved. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to remain calm while the full circumstances of the rescue operation are established.
