Neria Leiter, the son of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, remains in critical condition following a car-ramming incident at a security checkpoint in the West Bank on Tuesday. Ambassador Yechiel Leiter disclosed the severity of his son’s injuries through a social media post, confirming that medical teams at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem are working to save him.
“I am grateful to the IDF and to the medical team at Shaare Zedek who are now fighting to save the life of Neria Dov ben Chana,” the ambassador wrote. “I believe in the power of prayer… Neria needs a miracle.”
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the assault occurred within the operational area of the Binyamin Brigade, specifically at the Maccabim checkpoint located west of Ramallah. The military stated that security forces eliminated the individual responsible for the attack. The IDF confirmed that one soldier sustained severe injuries but did not release additional details regarding his status.
The incident has drawn attention to the Leiter family’s ongoing sacrifices during the conflict. Neria’s older brother, Maj. Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed in combat in northern Gaza on November 10, 2023. Ambassador Leiter, who was born in the United States and also goes by the name Michael, noted that Neria continued his reserve duty after his brother’s death, accumulating hundreds of days of service on various fronts since the October 7 attacks.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, issued a statement offering support. “My wife Sarah and I, together with all the people of Israel, are praying for a miracle,” Netanyahu wrote. “Yechiel, my dear, we are all with you.”
Ambassador Leiter has held the position of Israel’s envoy to the U.S. since January 2025.
