Israel has ordered the closure of its British consulate in East Jerusalem, retaliating against a new trade restriction imposed by London. The move follows the announcement by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband that the UK would ban imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, a decision coordinated with France and ten other nations.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed that the consulate, which was accredited to the Palestinian Authority, would be shut down. Saar also declared that the UK would no longer participate in the United States-led coordination mission for Gaza. Furthermore, Israel plans to terminate British training programs for Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank and will bar certain UK elected officials and nationals from entering the country.
Describing London’s actions as “morally distorted,” Saar accused the British government of blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign state and its electoral process. He condemned Miliband’s characterization of settler activities as “ethnic cleansing” as “outrageous lies.”
In response, Miliband stated during a parliamentary address on Tuesday that Israel was turning a “blind eye” to what he termed ethnic cleansing by settlers in the West Bank. The region has experienced escalating violence linked to settlement expansion, particularly in areas such as Qusra, south of Nablus, where Israeli forces have been deployed amidst rising tensions.
I’m surprised by the speed of Israel’s retaliation. The import bans were a clear signal, but shutting down the consulate feels like a major diplomatic overreach.
This escalation is alarming. Closing consulates rarely helps anyone; it just deepens the diplomatic rift without solving the underlying violence.
