Tehran has announced it will establish a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz in collaboration with Oman, alongside the declaration of a restricted military zone in the area. Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s top security official, stated that these measures would be disclosed “in the coming days,” according to reports from Al Jazeera.
Rezaei also warned that any vessels attempting to navigate through the designated restricted area could face sanctions. The announcement comes amid escalating tensions following a series of US military strikes on Iranian oil infrastructure.
Compounding the hostility, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, issued a stark warning regarding future confrontations. He stated that Iran would deliver a “heavier and more painful response” to any additional attacks. This threat follows the destruction of three Iranian oil tankers by the US military on Saturday.
The Pentagon has since released video footage purporting to show the sinking of the Iranian tanker M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman. US authorities claim the vessel was targeted after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missile attacks against US Navy ships operating near the Strait of Hormuz.
The maritime escalation coincides with continued ground conflict in the region. Israeli forces reported killing at least five Palestinians in Gaza on Sunday, including a child in an artillery strike on a school shelter and a father-daughter pair in a vehicle attack, according to the Wafa news agency. Additionally, Israeli settlers killed an 18-year-old Palestinian boy in the West Bank village of Hajeh. Despite a US-brokered ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon have persisted, resulting in at least four deaths and 20 injuries on Sunday.
Oman always strives for neutrality. I hope they are not being dragged into a conflict that endangers their own sovereign waters.
