Approximately 170,000 travelers found themselves stranded on Sunday after Indonesian authorities shut down the nation’s primary international airport along with seven other regional facilities. The closures were necessitated by hazardous volcanic ash and lava emissions from Mount Anak Krakatau, located more than 150km away.
The disruption was extensive, with over 1,500 flights canceled across the archipelago, including numerous services in the capital, Jakarta. In addition to the aviation chaos, the city government announced that educational institutions would shift to online classes on Monday, though it did not specify the duration of this interim measure.
