iPhone 18 Pro: Five Must-Test Features Right Out of the Box

The iPhone 18 Pro has officially launched, bringing significant upgrades that may not match the headline-grabbing excitement of the newly announced iPhone Duo, but still offer substantial improvements for users. Apple has expanded manual control within the Camera app, introduced a variable aperture on the primary lens, updated Photographic Styles, shrunk the Dynamic Island, and increased charging speeds.

For new owners, here are the key features to explore immediately.

Experiment with Variable Aperture

The 48-megapixel main camera is the first on an iPhone to feature a variable aperture. This mechanism includes six physical blades that open and close to control light intake and depth of field, similar to traditional DSLR lenses. Users can select from four settings in the Camera app: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.

At f/1.48, the sensor captures more light and produces a stronger background blur, ideal for low-light environments like restaurants. Conversely, switching to f/4 reduces light intake but increases sharpness across the entire frame, making it suitable for group shots or landscapes. This setting can also create a starburst effect on bright lights. These controls are accessible via the six-dot button in the Camera app but are limited to the main lens in 1x and 2x modes; other lenses retain a fixed aperture.

Utilize New Pro Camera Controls

Beyond aperture adjustments, the iPhone 18 Pro introduces manual controls for shutter speed, focus, and white balance—features previously confined to third-party applications. Adjusting shutter speed can turn car headlights into light streaks, while locking white balance prevents skin tone shifts when moving between different lighting conditions.

All these settings are grouped under the same six-dot menu. Users can customize the interface by pressing and holding any control at the top of the screen and dragging it into their preferred position for quick access.

Customize Photographic Styles

Photographic Styles, initially introduced with the iPhone 13, allow users to modify specific layers of an image such as contrast, shadows, and colors, rather than applying a blanket filter. The iPhone 18 Pro adds two new customization options: grain and texture.

To access these, take a photo, open the editing menu, tap Styles, and select Customize. In the Texture tab, users can soften skin tones, add glow effects, apply film-like highlights, or introduce a grainy aesthetic. These tools provide greater creative flexibility for enhancing photos post-capture.

Explore the Redesigned Dynamic Island

Apple has reduced the size of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro, allowing for more visible screen content when it is inactive. Additionally, the island can now display up to three Live Activities simultaneously. This enables users to manage multiple tasks at once, such as controlling music playback, monitoring a timer, and tracking a sports score.

Interaction remains consistent with previous models: press and hold on any Live Activity within the island to expand it. Compatible apps will automatically support these enhancements.

Take Advantage of Faster Charging

The iPhone 18 Pro supports significantly faster charging. According to Apple, the device can charge from 0 to 50 percent in approximately 15 minutes via a wired connection, or in about 30 minutes using a MagSafe charger.

To achieve these speeds, a USB PD 3.1 adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply capable of 60W or higher is required. Apple conducted its tests using its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which peaks at 60W. It is important to note that these rapid charging rates apply only to the first half of the battery cycle; the subsequent charging phase slows down to preserve long-term battery health. This improvement is particularly beneficial for quick top-ups during emergencies.
