As memory prices remain stubbornly high, major processor manufacturers Intel and AMD are responding by reintroducing CPUs that support the older, more budget-friendly DDR4 standard.
Gigabyte announced on Friday that two of its motherboard lines will be compatible with forthcoming processors utilizing Intel’s LGA 1700 socket. Originally launched in 2021 alongside the 12th-generation Alder Lake chips, this platform initially offered flexibility by supporting both DDR4 and the then-newer DDR5 RAM.
However, Intel shifted toward a DDR5-only architecture in 2024. According to Gigabyte, this dual-format compatibility is now being restored, allowing users to upgrade their systems without facing the steep costs associated with current RAM markets.
Is the performance gap really worth the savings, or are we just stuck with yesterday’s tech?
I remember when ‘future-proof’ meant buying twice. Thanks for the reminder that old tech isn’t always bad.
Does this mean LGA 1700 boards are actually viable again? I was ready to switch platforms entirely.
Why did they drop DDR4 support in the first place? Making us upgrade unnecessarily just seems shortsighted.
Finally! My wallet was bleeding from those DDR5 prices. Great news for budget builders everywhere.
