India Tightens Security and Cuts Transport in Delhi Ahead of Major Protests

New Delhi authorities have deployed thousands of police and paramilitary forces across central Delhi while restricting public transport and mobile internet access in anticipation of a major youth-led demonstration. The rally, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), is calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding recent revisions to voter rolls.

The CJP anticipates this Saturday’s event will be the largest in a series of near-daily demonstrations challenging what critics describe as electoral manipulation favoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, police denied the organizers a permit to hold the protest at Jantar Mantar, the city’s traditional site for public demonstrations, citing late submission and prior violations of agreements made during earlier rallies. Officials warned that any attempt to bypass the ban would result in a forceful law enforcement response.

Precautionary measures include the closure of 57 metro stations beginning Friday night, the cancellation of several long-distance trains, and a suspension of mobile internet services within a four-kilometer radius of the protest zone until Saturday evening. Roadways have been sealed with multiple layers of metal barricades. The Supreme Court intervened on Friday, stating that blanket metro closures were unlikely and that certain train services must continue to operate.

CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke criticized the government’s approach on social media, asserting that authorities were willing to inconvenience millions rather than permit a peaceful assembly. Meanwhile, the group reported that approximately 10,000 individuals traveling from across the country have been detained.

The unrest stems from the deletion of more than 130 million names from voter lists. While the Election Commission maintains the purge targets duplicates and ineligible foreign nationals, opponents argue it disproportionately impacts marginalized and minority groups. Tensions intensified after reports emerged that Kumar’s two deputies had formally raised objections at least 14 times over the past ten months, allegations the Commission and BJP have denied.

The CJP originated in May as an online satire movement following Chief Justice Surya Kant’s comment labeling unemployed youth as “cockroaches.” It has since evolved into a significant political force among young Indians. The current wave of protests follows the July demonstrations that led to the resignation of the education minister over exam paper leaks and occurs months before crucial state elections in early 2027, including in the populous state of Uttar Pradesh.

3 responses to “India Tightens Security and Cuts Transport in Delhi Ahead of Major Protests”

  1. The court ordering metro closures to be narrowed is a good sign, but detaining 10,000 young travelers from across India feels like political suppression.

  2. Blocking millions from traveling to protest seems excessive. Why inconvenience law-abiding citizens instead of just allowing the rally at Jantar Mantar?

  3. 130 million names removed is alarming. I hope the Election Commission provides transparent data on who was deleted and why.
