India Detains ‘Cockroach’ Movement Founder Ahead of Election Commission Protest

Indian police arrested Abhijeet Dipke, the leader of the satirical “Cockroach Party,” on Saturday, marking a significant escalation ahead of a planned demonstration targeting the Election Commission. The group announced the detention, noting that authorities appeared to have anticipated the move.

In a prerecorded video released following the arrest, Dipke named an interim leader to assume responsibility for the movement in his absence. The crackdown comes amid heightened tensions and strict security deployments in Delhi, aimed at preventing the protest against the nation’s top electoral body.

France 24 correspondent Andrew Hilliar observed that the authorities seemed to have foreseen the timing of the action, suggesting a calculated effort to disrupt the organization of the upcoming rally.

  1. They anticipated the move before the protest even started. That level of surveillance is genuinely concerning.
