Germany’s AfD Seeks Historic State Victory in Saxony-Anhalt Election

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) is positioning itself to achieve a historic milestone as voters in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt head to the polls on Sunday. The anti-immigrant party is targeting the first state-level executive role for a far-right group since the conclusion of World War II.

Although the AfD maintains a significant lead in polling data, political analysts suggest the party could face substantial obstacles if it fails to secure an absolute majority. Remaining politically isolated, the party may struggle to assemble a governing coalition even with strong electoral support.

  1. History repeating itself in the worst way possible. Hard to believe we’re discussing this again after so many decades.

  2. Polling leads don’t equal governance. Forming a coalition without an absolute majority sounds like a nightmare.

  3. I didn’t realize the AfD had such a commanding lead in the polls. How are coalition partners finding this viable?
