The Trump administration has announced plans to terminate $45 million in financial support for Namibia’s HIV response program, bringing an end to more than twenty years of annual contributions.
According to a joint statement released on Friday by officials from Namibia and the United States, the final $45 million payment is scheduled for the 2027 fiscal year.
Officials noted that the termination of direct funding marks a strategic shift, as the support will transition into a technical cooperation model moving forward.
Ending direct funding is a risky move. I hope the technical shift actually replaces the money, or cases will spike.
Twenty years of support ending is concerning. Are we sure technical cooperation alone can sustain these lifesaving programs?
