Search and rescue operations continued in Nepal on Saturday, marking the tenth day since devastating flash floods struck the border region with Tibet. While rescuers successfully extracted two individuals alive, authorities report that thousands of people are still unaccounted for following the disaster.
Nepal’s military released footage showing a woman discovered buried under thick mud and debris inside her home in the flood-affected district of Nuwakot. She was airlifted to Kathmandu for medical attention.
In a separate operation, a Chinese national was rescued from deep within the Trishuli-3A hydropower project in Rasuwa district. According to Nepal’s prime minister’s office, the man was pulled from a 225-meter tunnel and evacuated by helicopter. Nepalese military personnel conducted the rescue alongside South Korean disaster experts. He becomes the third person saved from the hydropower site, following the rescue of two Nepalese workers on Friday.
Despite these successes, the scope of the tragedy remains severe. Approximately 900 workers are still listed as missing, with an estimated 500 believed to be trapped across tunnels at twelve different hydropower projects where rescue efforts are concentrated.
The flash floods, which impacted the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Tanahun, have killed at least 1,300 people and left more than 5,000 missing. Nepal’s disaster management agency stated that the floods were likely triggered by a glacier collapse.
International support has been mobilized, with specialized teams from China, India, South Korea, and the United States joining the search efforts in hopes of locating additional survivors.
