David Moyes has confirmed he has never met or spoken directly with Everton owner Dan Friedkin since his return to the manager’s role in January 2025. Despite Friedkin completing his takeover of the club in December 2024, the billionaire has not attended a home match and operates from Houston through his son-in-law, Rishi Majithia.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, Moyes addressed the lack of direct communication with the club’s principal owner. “My real contact is Angus,” Moyes explained, referring to chief executive Angus Kinnear. “Rishi is the next one and then the head of the Friedkin family in America. I don’t really get any direct conversations with them, but I do through Rishi.”
The management structure came under intense scrutiny during a chaotic summer transfer window. Everton faced backlash after accepting a £40million bid from Nottingham Forest for promising midfielder Harrison Armstrong, though the deal was ultimately abandoned. Frustration peaked on deadline day when striker Beto was sold to Fiorentina before a replacement was secured, and American forward Folarin Balogun withdrew from a pending move from Monaco.
The series of events left the squad with just 18 senior players, including singular cover at right-back, left-back, and striker. Moyes voiced support for the angry fans, stating the club is “managed by an Evertonian” and acknowledging that “supporters aren’t always wrong.”
Although recognizing the difficulties posed by new ownership that is still “feeling their way,” Moyes ruled out resigning. “Everton’s different,” he said. “I wouldn’t have come back for anybody but Everton.” He expressed confidence in the players’ commitment despite the roster shortages, adding, “They are with us, I believe they are with us.”
