A project at Shallowford Farm in the center of Dartmoor is working to broaden access to rural life through hands-on gardening. Charles Staniland, a retired horticulturalist who began his interest in the outdoors as a child, now volunteers at the site to instruct young people in agricultural practices.
Staniland emphasized the importance of demonstrating that food requires physical labor and is not merely something that appears on a plate. He noted that his goal is for participants to feel they can actively contribute to the process of growing their own sustenance.
According to Staniland, the initiative aims to spark a new appreciation for the natural world among younger generations. He described the experience as a vital transition for individuals moving away from concrete-heavy settings, calling it an excellent introductory step toward a greener lifestyle.
