Chelsea Title Hopes Stutter as Draw Exposes Finishing Flaw

Chelsea’s pursuit of the WSL title faced an early reality check as a commanding performance against Aston Villa ended in a disappointing draw, highlighting persistent finishing issues. Despite recording 34 shots—their highest tally in a Women’s Super League match since last season—Chelsea could only take a one-nil lead through Mel James, who struck inside the first 11 minutes.

Villa struggled to contain their opponents, managing just five touches in the Chelsea box, but secured a point late on when Noelle Maritz’s shot deflected off goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and looped over defender Veerle Buurman. The result left Villa boss Natalia Arroyo and her supporters celebrating a counter-intuitive result at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager Vincent Bompastor expressed frustration with the outcome, noting the statistical disparity between the two sides. “If you analyse the performance and the statistics, then you would say it’s crazy that we didn’t win,” Bompastor said. “The reality of football is that if we were two or three nil up then the game is over. It’s a completely different game in the second half.”

Bompastor emphasized the need for his side to sustain momentum and accelerate play to close out games more effectively. “At the end, we are all frustrated because it’s not a good result,” he added.

The manager’s options were further constrained by injuries to summer signing Melvine Malard and Mayra Ramirez. England forward Aggie Beever-Jones, tasked with filling the void left by Sam Kerr, struggled for confidence. Although she scored, her effort was disallowed for offside, underscoring the锋利ness lacking in the final third.

“What can we do in this scenario? We have to stay confident, stick together and work hard,” Bompastor urged. He pointed to the mental aspect of the game, stating, “In football some of these things are mental. It’s the mentality – the mindset of being ruthless and clinical in the box. The best teams don’t need many opportunities. They just need one or two and maybe that’s enough to win the game. That is something we need to work on.”
