President Donald Trump stated Friday that he intends to deploy up to $500 million from his political action committee to support Republican candidates with approximately two months remaining before the November midterm elections.
“I think I have like close to a billion dollars in the super PAC, and I’m allocating probably four or $500 million,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We’re going to spend a lot of money because we don’t want to lose our country.”
The announcement addresses growing concerns among some GOP officials and strategists that MAGA Inc. had been holding back its substantial financial resources in competitive House and Senate races.
According to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, MAGA Inc. reported $403.45 million in cash on hand as of July 31. This figure is less than half of the “close to a billion dollars” Trump cited, and the group has spent only about $21 million since the start of 2025, including $1.7 million in independent expenditures.
Despite the discrepancy in reported cash reserves, the Associated Press notes that MAGA Inc.’s funding exceeds the cash reserves of any major party committee. The group has initiated some activity in battleground states, such as sponsoring an event featuring Vice President JD Vance in Michigan, but has not yet deployed funds at the scale Trump outlined.
Trump emphasized that he would personally determine where to direct support, focusing on candidates in winnable competitive races. “I’m going to spend whatever amount of money necessary to try and help us,” he said. “This is my money that I control.”
However, legal distinctions remain regarding the source of these funds. The FEC classifies MAGA Inc. as an “unauthorized” hybrid PAC, meaning it cannot contribute directly to candidates. Its “non-contribution account” accepts unlimited donations for independent spending but operates separately from candidate campaigns.
Trump also indicated that unspent funds could be retained for use in the 2028 election cycle, as federal rules do not require MAGA Inc. to exhaust its balance during the current cycle.
This financial commitment follows Trump’s Wednesday declaration that he would campaign extensively for Republican House and Senate candidates, including a planned trip to Alaska to support Senator Dan Sullivan.
Half a billion sounds huge, but FEC filings show less than half that in cash. Where is the rest coming from?
Classic move. Spending the war chest now to secure wins, then keeping the remainder for 2028. Smart strategy.
I’m surprised this is happening so late. I thought they would have flooded these races months ago. Better late than never, I guess.
