MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine court issued an arrest warrant for Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday, charging her with publicly threatening the assassination of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. The order intensifies a high-stakes political confrontation between the vice president and the president, who were once allies in the 2022 elections.
Duterte, who has denied the allegations, was already impeached by the House of Representatives in May on charges including the threats against top government officials and alleged financial misconduct. If convicted, she faces permanent disqualification from public office, effectively barring her from running for president in 2028 when Marcos’ term expires.
The legal trouble stems from remarks Duterte made during a 2024 online press conference. She stated that if she were killed, an assassin would eliminate Marcos, his wife, and Romualdez. Although she later clarified that she was not threatening the president but rather expressing concern for her own safety, the comments triggered a criminal investigation and raised national security alarms.
Paul Lawrence Lim, a lawyer for the vice president, stated that Duterte has no intention of evading the law and will pursue all legal remedies. He indicated that she plans to post bail to avoid detention while the case proceeds in the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.
The impeachment trial, conducted by the Senate, began in July. The charges mark a dramatic fall from grace for Duterte, who previously shared power with Marcos following an alliance between their respective political dynasties. Their coalition quickly unraveled as policy differences and personal rivalries surfaced.
The dispute also highlights divergent foreign policy approaches. Marcos has strengthened defense ties with the United States and taken a firm stance against China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea. In contrast, Duterte’s father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, maintained close relations with Beijing and Moscow. Sara Duterte has faced criticism for not condemning Chinese attacks on Filipino forces and fishermen in disputed waters.
The case unfolds against the backdrop of Duterte’s father being detained at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. He is scheduled to stand trial on Nov. 30 for alleged crimes against humanity related to the brutal anti-drug campaign that killed thousands during his presidency. Rodrigo Duterte has denied authorizing extrajudicial killings.
