New Zealand has granted approval for the use of MDMA in treating severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), becoming only the second country globally to authorize the substance for this medical purpose. The regulatory decision was announced by Medsafe, the nation’s pharmaceutical regulatory body.
On Friday, two psychiatrists received authorization to prescribe pharmaceutical-grade MDMA to eligible patients. This development follows a similar move by Australia in 2023, which permitted the use of psychedelics, including MDMA, for treating PTSD and treatment-resistant depression.
The approval marks a significant shift in the global approach to mental health treatments, aligning New Zealand with Australia as early adopters of MDMA-assisted therapy for severe psychiatric conditions.
