Art Garfunkel, the iconic folk-pop figure, is preparing to hit the road once again at the age of 83. Known for his deep curiosity and multifaceted life, Garfunkel has long insisted that he is more than just a vocalist. “I am a singer – there, use that as the title of your article,” he said, though he listed numerous other pursuits: teaching mathematics, walking across countries, traveling on freighters, and maintaining a rigorous reading habit that includes works by Darwin, Tolstoy, and Proust. Despite these diverse interests, he acknowledged that his identity always seems to return to music.
Garfunkel rose to fame alongside Paul Simon as half of Simon and Garfunkel, the best-selling pop duo in history. Their hits, including The Sound of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water, showcased Garfunkel’s celebrated baritone. He also achieved success as a solo artist and actor. However, until recently, he had largely stepped away from performing and hadn’t toured since 2019.
The decision to return to the stage came after a period of introspection. Garfunkel described lying on a pillow, drifting through dreams and questioning the purpose of his days. “What is my day? What am I supposed to do with myself?” he recalled. It was during this reflective phase that he found his way back to singing, leading to his latest tour, which promises to celebrate a rich and restless life in music.
