Former NFL quarterback and ex-Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez has filed a motion to plead guilty regarding an October 2025 altercation in Indianapolis that resulted in him being stabbed, according to court documents. The filing was submitted Thursday in Marion County Superior Court, though it remains unclear which specific charges he intends to admit to.
Sanchez faces a felony battery charge alongside several misdemeanors, including unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication. A judge must still approve the plea agreement. His jury trial, originally scheduled for Tuesday, had been postponed five times since its initial setting in December.
Nick Sanchez Jr., Mark’s brother and legal adviser, described the development as positive. “We are finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor’s office that provides a path toward resolving the state’s case,” he told CBS News. “We’re also encouraged by the constructive conversations taking place regarding the related civil matter. There is real momentum toward bringing this entire chapter to a close.”
The incident occurred on Oct. 4, 2025, in downtown Indianapolis, where Sanchez was covering the Colts vs. Raiders game at Lucas Oil Stadium in his role as a broadcaster. According to a police affidavit, Sanchez approached 69-year-old Perry Tole after Tole had backed his truck into a hotel loading dock. Tole alleges that Sanchez entered the vehicle without permission and physically blocked him from retrieving his phone.
The affidavit states that Tole felt he was in physical danger and responded by spraying Sanchez with pepper spray. When Sanchez moved toward him afterward, Tole drew a knife in self-defense and stabbed Sanchez two or three times in the upper right torso. Sanchez was hospitalized for his injuries.
Tole, who was also injured in the confrontation, has alleged in both police reports and a civil lawsuit against Sanchez and Fox Sports that the former athlete smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech prior to the fight. Images of Tole circulating online showed him in a neck brace with a facial laceration.
Attorney Matt Golitko, who represents Tole, stated that discussions with Sanchez’s team have been professional and productive. “Mr. Tole appreciates the progress we have achieved and looks forward to an amicable resolution,” Golitko said.
Sanchez, who played 10 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2019, was released by Fox Sports following the incident. He spent the first four years of his career with the New York Jets before playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Washington.
