The 2026 Ig Nobel prizes were presented on September 3 at a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland, honoring scientific inquiries that first provoke laughter and then stimulate deeper thought. While the awards lack the financial rewards of their prestigious Nobel counterparts, they offer significant visibility for unconventional research.
The biomechanics prize went to Matilda Brindle, Catherine Talbot, and Stuart West from the University of Oxford for establishing a rigorous definition of kissing applicable across species. The researchers defined the act as a “non-agonistic interaction involving directed, intraspecific, oral–oral contact with some movement of the lips/mouthparts and no food transfer.” Under this framework, behaviors observed in polar bears, certain birds, and ants qualify as kissing. The study further suggests that this behavior evolved approximately 21.5 million years ago in the common ancestor of large apes, implying that ancient humans may have kissed Neanderthals.
“My jaw hit the floor when I got the phone call. It’s certainly one of my proudest life achievements,” Brindle said. She added that the award highlights how animals kiss and when the behavior might have evolved in primates, hoping it sparks further curiosity about the underlying reasons.
The soil science award recognized Franz Bender and Marcel van der Heijden at the University of Zurich for a unique decomposition study. They recruited citizen scientists from over 25 countries to bury 1,000 pairs of underwear and retrieve them two months later, providing data on soil biological activity and the impact of land use on degradation processes.
Other notable winners included a physics team led by Randy Hurd, Zhao Pan, Tadd Truscott, and Kaveeshan Thurairajah, who developed theoretical and experimental models to create splash-free urinals. Additionally, a technology prize was awarded to a team including Changhong Cao from McGill University for pioneering “necroprinting,” a process that repurposes mosquito mouthparts as high-resolution, low-cost 3D printing nozzles.
The recognition underscores a shift in how the scientific community views the Ig Nobel prizes. Originally launched in 1991 by Marc Abrahams, editor of the Annals of Improbable Research, the awards were once viewed by some as insulting. Today, many researchers see them as valuable career enhancements that expose their work to broader audiences.
