Four educational institutions in the Redcar and Cleveland area have announced early closures to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of their students, staff, and families. The decision follows consultations between local headteachers and the Redcar and Cleveland Council regarding a funeral procession expected to cause significant traffic disruption.
South Bank Primary School, Outwood Academy Normanby, Archway Academy in Teesville, and St Margaret Clitherow’s Catholic Primary School are among the affected institutions. Each has scheduled its closure around lunchtime, with Archway Academy confirming an 11:45 BST shutdown and St Margaret Clitherow’s closing at 12:15.
South Bank Primary School stated that the early closure was necessary to protect pupils from the large crowds expected for the service at St John’s Church on Normanby Road. Headteacher Tammy Cooper noted that the school’s pastoral team would remain available to support any students who might feel upset or anxious about the event.
Mark Robinson, principal of Outwood Academy Normanby, informed parents in a letter that the early closure was agreed upon following discussions with local headteachers and the council. Cleveland Police confirmed they anticipate traffic delays and have implemented plans to maintain public safety during the event.
Additionally, the council reported that the Mackenzie Thorpe Centre will remain closed for the day. Some children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) residing in the South Bank area, who attend other schools, will also be collected earlier than usual.
