However, for diners seeking table service, the landscape is different. A review of major UK restaurant chains reveals that complete free meals are rare, replaced primarily by buy-one-get-one-free offers, spending thresholds, and loyalty-based perks.
At Harvester and Zizzi, customers receive a free main course only when they purchase another full-price main. Frankie & Benny’s operates similarly, granting a free main with the order of two or more paid meals. Byron allows a free burger but enforces a £5 minimum spend, while Wagamama provides free gyoza to loyalty members who have earned at least one stamp in the preceding six months and meet a £12 spending requirement.
Several chains have opted for discount models instead of free items. Turtle Bay gives members a £20 birthday credit with no minimum spend, whereas Bella Italia offers £15 off bills where the total spend reaches £30. Las Iguanas presents two options: a free main with the purchase of two other meals, or a 20% discount voucher.
Loyalty tiers also play a significant role in Pizza Express rewards. Bronze members may secure a free dessert with a £10 spend, while higher-tier members can enjoy free pizzas or drinks provided they spend at least £15. Prezzo members can redeem free drinks or desserts with a £25 minimum spend, and Bill’s offers complimentary prosecco or pancakes, provided the booking is made in advance and qualifying meals are ordered.
So much for a truly free birthday meal! The strings attached make most of these offers feel like a trap.
