Hemel Hempstead charity tea room faces closure despite Ludwig filming boost

A volunteer-run charity tea room in Hemel Hempstead is facing permanent closure unless it can raise £25,000 by the end of October, despite the recent presence of a major television production.

Liberty Tea Rooms and Community Hub in Hertfordshire has been used as a set for the third series of Ludwig, starring David Mitchell. The venue was temporarily closed between 15 September and 7 October to allow filming to take place, with its exterior dressed to resemble a bank from an earlier era.

Mark Kitson, chairman of the trustees, acknowledged that the production had generated significant local interest. He noted that hiring out the building provided crucial income during a difficult period for the charity. The production team has agreed to restore the premises to their original condition once shooting concludes, including repairing a broken window and updating signage.

However, trustees stated that the charity remains in an “extremely low cash position.” Although staffing costs have been reduced, the organization warned it would have to close permanently if the fundraising target is not met.

Kitson highlighted the broader challenges facing high streets, noting that many communities are currently struggling. He described the tea room’s role as a community hub, offering more than just refreshments.

“When you come into the Tea Rooms, someone will welcome you, talk to you if you want a chat, offer a meal if you need it, and can also provide debt advice or a food bank parcel,” Kitson said. “You might just want tea and a scone, but if you need something more, we will do our very best to help you.”

Filming involved extensive use of extras and crew members, with one scene requiring the use of a rain machine. The trustees expressed gratitude for the positive atmosphere the production brought to the high street, even as they continue to campaign for financial support to ensure the charity’s survival.

  1. Does anyone know the exact deadline? I’d love to donate, but I need to check if October 31st is the hard cutoff.

  2. David Mitchell fans need to rally! I’ll be there this weekend for tea and scones. Let’s hit that target.

  3. So a famous TV show films there, but it still can’t save the place? The irony is absolutely heartbreaking for the community.
