Google Store trade-in values for old phones are surprisingly generous, especially for Pixels

The launch of the Google Pixel 11 lineup has brought with it premium price tags, with the base model starting at $899 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold reaching $1,900. However, Google is encouraging upgrades by offering trade-in values that often exceed those found at major competitors like Best Buy and Amazon.

For instance, a 128GB Pixel 9 Pro XL, which originally retailed for $1,099 in 2024, is valued at up to $255 by Apple, $310 by Amazon, and $300 by Best Buy. In contrast, Google’s program offers a considerably higher payout for the same device, continuing a trend of more favorable rates across many models.

While trade-in values depend on device condition and the specific Pixel 11 model being purchased, Google accepts phones as far back as the original Pixel for $100, the Galaxy S10 for $30, and the iPhone 6s Plus for $30. Mid-range older devices also see strong returns, with the Pixel 4a and Galaxy S20 each worth $150 and the iPhone 11 valued at $200. Newer flagships command even more, including $600 for a Pixel 10 Pro, $700 for a Galaxy S26 Ultra, and $550 for an iPhone 17.

Despite Google’s competitive rates for Pixel devices, consumers are advised to compare options before committing. Best Buy may offer lower base trade-in rates but includes gift cards of up to $350 for Pixel line purchases. Amazon similarly provides bundles featuring gift cards or discounts on the Pixel Watch 5, which may benefit frequent shoppers at those retailers.

The trade-in process is integrated directly into the Google Store checkout. Customers select their desired Pixel, choose a color and storage size, and click “Get estimate” under the trade-in section. After entering their old device’s details and confirming its condition, they add the trade-in to their cart and proceed to checkout. Google then provides a prepaid shipping kit for the old device, with instructions to transfer data, factory reset the phone, and remove any account locks.

Buyers should note a critical option during checkout: checking the box to “Accept the new value if it changes after inspection.” If selected, customers receive the trade-in credit regardless of inspection results. If unchecked, Google will return the device without credit if its condition does not match the online assessment.

Discount application also varies. Eligible customers may receive an instant trade-in discount applied directly to their order total. Others will receive the credit as a refund to their payment method after the device is received and approved.
