Palestinian officials reported that five people, including two children, were killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, undermining the fragile ceasefire currently in effect in the war-torn territory.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Education, seven-year-old Wafaa Aqila and her father died when an Israeli missile struck the vehicle they were occupying. The pair had recently purchased school supplies in preparation for the upcoming academic year.
Later that day, an artillery barrage hit the Sakina School in Deir el-Balah, which is being used as a shelter for displaced residents. The attack killed Saadi Ghalia, a first-grade student.
In a statement issued Sunday, the Ministry of Education condemned the violence, stating that while children globally prepare for the start of the school year, those in Gaza face “killing and annihilation.”
The Gaza Health Ministry stated on Monday that at least five Palestinians were killed and 30 wounded in the preceding 24 hours. Additionally, two individuals died from injuries sustained in earlier strikes.
Since the ceasefire began in October, at least 1,352 people have been killed and 4,511 wounded. Broader casualty figures from the conflict, which started in October 2023, indicate that 73,658 Palestinians have been killed and 174,622 wounded.
