New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart faces the possibility of undergoing knee surgery that would conclude his 2026 campaign, as reported by ESPN. The team is currently assessing the extent of the injury sustained during Monday night’s defeat against the Los Angeles Rams.
Head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that Dart exited the game less than four minutes in while being pressured on a third-and-eight play. The injury occurred after Rams linebacker Byron Young hit Dart from the right side, causing him to fall heavily into linebacker Josaiah Stewart, whose legs undercut Dart.
Although initial reports suggested a sprained medial collateral ligament, Harbaugh declined to rule out a more severe diagnosis or the need for surgery. Following the 28-6 loss, Harbaugh stated the situation is “in the neighbourhood” and indicated that an upcoming MRI would provide clearer details on the timeframe for recovery.
“It’s an ongoing conversation about the health of a player, of a person,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve got to prepare for the range of possibilities.” He added that the organization will release specific information once the evaluation is complete.
Harbaugh expressed confidence in backup Jameis Winston’s ability to take over for whatever duration Dart remains sidelined. The Giants also dealt with other injuries during the game, including a left ankle sprain for pass rusher Brian Burns and a lower-body issue for left tackle Andrew Thomas in the fourth quarter. Additionally, wide receiver Malik Nabers had to manually reposition his right shoulder after dislocating it late in the first quarter.
Burns emphasized resilience, noting that injuries are an inherent part of the sport. “That’s just part of football,” Burns said. “Guys go down every day, and it’s always next guy up.”
Harbaugh urged his team not to be discouraged by the string of setbacks, stating, “All around the league, everybody deals with it… This is football. This is the NFL. This is what you do. So our task is not to lament it.”
The Giants, now 1-1 to start the season, will next face the Tennessee Titans.
Devastating news for Dart. That kind of injury can derail a rookie season before it really gets going. Hope it’s not an ACL.
Wait, is Harbaugh coaching the Giants now? I thought he was still with Baltimore. This article seems confused.
